The “Aiguamolls de l”Empord\u00e0” (Ampurd\u00e1n masrhes) are one of the main wetlands in Catalonia, the result of the interaction between the rivers and the sea. The Natural Park, created in 1983, is a mosaic of interdependent, but at the same time distinct, ecosystems: a group of wetlands, lagoons and rivers, of crops and irrigation channels, with beaches and a great dune system that protects the coast from storms.<\/p>\n

This protected natural space is an area of breeding and migratory shelter of numerous endangered species. Birds make of this space their shelter and resting place. Here they live more than 300 species, most of them protected and of remarkable beauty.\u00a0 Its good condition is also key in reducing the effects of climate change in the region as it improves the water quality, recharges the aquifers and slows down the intake of sea salt water from the sea towards the interior.<\/p>\n

The fertility of the ground helps the development of agriculture and the complexity of their habitats, and its biological richness enhance the fishing in the bay. Historically, this territory has produced a rich cultural heritage and is an environmental research and teaching resource. At the same time, it is a key spotlight of attraction for visitors.<\/p>\n
